Sat. Feb. 28th at 10 PM. Call came in from University of Maryland Hospital stating that
a kidney and pancreas has become available. Mike's, as well as two others', tissue
and blood were being processed throughout the night for best match. They will call us
back next morning with results.
Sun. March 1st at 8:30 AM. Call from UMMC stating Mike is best match for organ
transplant. Mike, Sam and Linda heading down the road at 9:00 AM to UMMC for
processing and prep for kidney and pancreas transplant.
Sun. 5:45 PM. Mike went to surgery with positive attitude and all of our many prayers.
Sun 9:00 PM. Dr. Cooper came to waiting room and said pancreas was in and that
this part of the transplant looked good so far and Mike was doing well. He said Dr.
Sweitzer was, at present, transplanting the new kidney into Mike.
Mon. March 2nd at 12:15 AM. Dr. Sweitzer came to waiting room to say surgery was
over and Mike was in stable condition in ICU with constant assistance.
Mon. 2:00 AM. Sam and Linda were able to see Mike a few minutes, but asked to
leave when Mike began having slight breathing issues.
Mon. 6:00 AM. Able to see Mike a few minutes. His breathing tube was removed, but
he still has many other monitoring tubes, wires, and devices hooked up, but still doing
well.
Mon. 10:00 AM. Allowed to visit Mike 10 minutes. Mike was awake and talking.
Complaining of a lot of pain, but still had a bit of humor about him. Nurse said it
appeared that the transplanted organs are functioning and lab numbers (blood sugar
and blood pressure) were looking good. The 10 minute visits will continue every two
hours until Mike's condition improves more.
Mon. Noon. Mike was more talkative and awake wanting to be moved to a regular
room. His lab numbers are still good.
Mon. 2:00 PM. Mike has a slight fever but still appears to be improving and in good
spirits
Mon. 4:00 PM. Mike same as at 2:00- just seems to be tiring.
Mon. 6:00 PM. Mike's fever has returned to normal but seems to be very tired and
speech is slurred a bit due to pain medication.
Mon. 8:00 PM. Good reports from Doctors and Nurses concerning Mike's recovery.
He may be moved to the 8th floor transplant recovery floor by midnight, due to his
rapid improvement.
*Thank you Dr. Cooper for doing the pancreas transplant and Dr. Sweitzer for doing
the kidney transplant.
Nurse Mona (Lisa), Nurses Jane and (Aunt) Margaret for your superb care- we all
thank you.
Tues. March 3 at 2:00 AM. Mike was moved to room 820- transplant recovery floor.
Tues 8:00 AM. Mike's IV is causing some problems and has to be relocated. Other
than that his vitals, numbers, and organ function is good. His remaining
recooperation will be on this floor until his release.
*On a personsal note- special thank you to Katrina Faith for arranging our stay at the
near-by Hilton for an unbelievable rate- WOW it really beats the chair and couch beds
we had the last couple of nights.
*Thanks to all for your continued thoughts, prayers, and concerns.
With Love, Mike, Sam and Linda
